What We're Doing

Dalits routinely suffer at the hands of authorities and high-caste leaders across India. Perhaps none suffer as much as Indian women, considered the lowest of the low. Teams from The Chapel in Akron and Green, Ohio led a series of Women's Empowerment, WE, Conferences throughout India in 2007.

Conferences offered rare opportunities for Dalit women to encourage one another and to be encouraged by the visiting team. They included specialized skills training in handicrafts like embroidery. Conferences were designed to reach out to women regardless of caste and help them realize their value and true worth.

How You Can Help: Empower Dalit Women

  • If you have a burden for the women of India, feel a call to pray or have a gift for fundraising, you can join the Women's Empowerment team.
  • WE trips are on hold for a time, but a prayer coordinator is desperately needed to help us seek God's direction for the future role that short-term trips might play in this outreach and to help raise money for a women's self-help coordinator for one year at each Dalit Education Center.

Did You Know ?

Beneath the Castes

A full 25% of the population of India are Dalit beneath the four main castes, and considered to be less than human.

Clay Cups

Many establishments in India discard clay drinking cups after they are used by Dalits in order to keep members of the upper castes from "being contaminated" by their "uncleanness."

Religious Persecution

Every year, great numbers of Indian pastors are beaten. Their lives and their families are threatened because of their faith.

Strategic Timing
This is a unique time in history when we can play a strategic role in helping the Dalit people gain their emancipation.
